Double page spread research
Double page spread
I have done a lot of research into magazine double page spreads and i have found these two that i like the most.
The first one with Rita Ora in uses the same colours as i use for my colour theme.(red, white and black) I like the fact that it has the image as the whole background. Using the brick wall it makes it have more of a grunge feel to it which is the look i', going for. I also feel that her name written across the top is very affective as it almost looks like it has been written in blood which also relates to the grungy feel. The writing also covers her face but make sure that her eyes are still being able to connect with the reader. Another strong aspect of this double page spread is that there are boxes surrounding the main body of the text which makes the text stand out more. It creates an edgy feel.
Whereas the second double page spread with Adele in is the complete opposite! The text almost wraps around Adele and this creates more of a warming feel to it. The colours are also black and white which gives me a good indication of how it will look when i produce my double page spread. I like how the picture is the dominant object of the piece and this makes it stand out from others. It also makes it look like there isn't as much text on the page which always makes the reader more inclined to read the whole story. The writing on this page varies in size. This is a good technique to use when trying to grab the audiences attention.
I feel that Rita Ora's double page spread style will suit my genre better then the Adele one. However i will still use some of the techniques used in the Adele one as this will create more dynamics to my double page spread.

Contents page re-draft
This is my re-draft of my contents page. I have added more content to it and more features. For example i have used a plug and puff to catch the readers eye. I have also stayed with the colour scheme as it makes it look slick and more professional. I have also added a web page address at the bottom for a more authentic. I still need to add 2 more pictures to it but i feel that i have made great progress and i'm happy with where i am. I need to make a few tweaks along the way but i'm nearly finished with the contents page now.

Content page 1st lesson draft
I have changed the layout of my content page because i didnt feel that it went with the type on music i was going for. I have gone for a more simple design. I feel that the beginning of my draft has met that requirement. The colours are black, white and red. These are the same as the front cover. i feel that this is good because i am carrying the theme through.

Content page ideas

These are some of the magazine content pages that i have found. The most prominent aspect of the pages are the numbers. It could be change in colour, font or size but they make it stand out. They also all include a photo of the main person. All three of them are mainly white or black. This would work well because of my colour scheme. I think that the gradient effect works well so i will try and use this.
Front cover 2
This is my second design of my front cover. As you can tell i have changed a few aspects of it from my last post. i have changed the yellow parts to white as i got feedback from fellow people my age and they said it looked 'odd' and 'amateur.' so i have taken this on board and changed it to white to give it a more unified and professional look. I have also added boxes around the cover lines. This makes it separate and seems more realistic. I feel that it makes it have more dynamics because it creates depths within the front cover. I have taken the 'Exclusive banner' out but i am going to replace it with a more interesting statement.

More Mast Heads
I have had a look at more designs for my mast head and i have decided on the third one down. This is because i feel it has that 'hippy' vibe to it and i think it could work well with the magazine genre

Main Image Photography Ideas
These are a few ideas I have got inspiration from for my main image on the front cover of my magazine. I feel that I could be very successful in producing images like this to appear on my front cover. I may change a few of the angles but I am going to use these as my template.

+Blue and white
+Blue and Red
Target Audience.
-I will be aiming my magazine towards 'young adults' (16-25) I feel that this will be the best age range to aim it at, as this is the age group of 'Ravers'-I also hope to aim it at both genders as it is not stereotypically a male or female genre.

-Pure music, Pure Power-There is no life without music
-It must be music
When in the year will it be published?
-I initial thought that it could just be published whenever but recently I have thought about doing a christmas edition. This would include Christmassy stories, giveaways etc.-If not a Christmas edition then I would do a winter orientated edition. Using symbols like snowflakes around the magazine and using warmer colours.
How frequently would it be published?
-It could be published every month, It would have a theme for each different one.Price of magazine.
-The price would have to be affordable because of the age range of the target audience. so, about £2.75.Photography notes
Photography notes
· Photoshop and image
manipulation cannot make a bad photo good. Use this as an enhancement.
·
The rule of thirds is
based on the fact that the human eye is naturally drawn to a point about 2/3 up
a page.
·
Photo will be more
pleasing to the eye if the main subject is located around one of the
intersection points, rather then the centre.
Middle shots can make
front cover awkward to work with.
·
Breaking the rules of
3rds, you can but needs to have reason and you need to be able to understand
it.
· Can crop and reframe
images so they fit within the rules.
·
The lines of the photo
are very important, the people, landscape, different shapes.
· Eyes normally look
across lines.
· Lines create points of
interest and depth.
· Can add dynamics to the
photo.
· Most prominent person
in the shot is seen to be the lead
· Change the angle of the
photograph, change in light, shade or pattern of it.
· Focal points- what is
the main point of the image you want the audience to see first.

Photography
These two images are very different.
The one with Lady GaGa in is more of a dynamic images. It has a grey/silver background which contrasts with the black lace bodysuit and her off white hair.
The angles in this photo are very interesting. There are many lines used. They all join at a point which makes the limbs look connected. The lines create a path way leading to her face. This makes her face the main focus point. The shapes are very angular. There isn't any curves from her body. This could suggest a strong women. The angle the photo is take from is relatively front on. Her head is slightly tilted up to symbolise that she has higher authority then 'us.' Her eye-line is straight forward but her eyes are just half open which could signify a feel of seductiveness. The centre of her face is along the 2 line which creates the focal point of her face. The photo hasn't got Lady GaGa slap bang in the middle. She is towards the left side, it makes it more interesting.
In 'The Source' the photo has a grime element to it. It's a head shot of a man with a gun to his throat. You can see the man himself is muscular, with tattoos which creates a 'gangster' feel. The fact he has a gun in his hand creates a darker side. The expression on his face is very unique for a typical front cover. His eyes aren't just closed they are squeezed closed which could represent fear. The eyes are still along the 2/3. He is slighting looking up which could be a biblical symbol, 'pray to
God.' The background is also a grey/pebble colour. It looks like a concrete texture. Which adds to the style of grimy/hip hop. The photo has the man slap bang in the middle, this usually isn't done but here it works because it is such a strong image it has the main focus in the centre.

Indie magazine research
INDIE MAGAZINE RESEARCH
I have found 3 different issues of the same magazine. One thing I noticed straight away is that they all have an acoustic guitar in. The acoustic guitar is the most popular instrument in music today. This is down to a range of reasons, for example it is a portable instrument and isn't that heavy. They are all touching it in some way. The pragmatics of this could show that its more then an instrument to them. In the 1st picture he is hugging it. In the 2nd he has it wrapped in his hair, almost to say that it cant get away from him.

Another thing I realised was that they are all men on the front. There isn't many females. This is because at the moment male acoustic artists are dominating the industry.

The background of the artist is very plan. I would have thought they would have had a photo shoot outside, when its sunny with the trees behind them looking natural. But maybe why they didn't do that was because it would take more intention away from the artist.

Music Magazine Audience and Masthead Conventions.
The target audience for 'Top of the pops' is young girls because of the content of the magazine. Including boy bands and quiz's etc.The colours for the masthead are always bold (bright pink) and have 'funky' writing (the 's') I feel that the majority of buyers are girls because magazines like this include pictures of boy bands that they can put up on their wall in their bedroom. The age range is probably from 7-15.
The target audience for 'Billboard' is for teenagers. This is still a pop based magazine but appeals to the older teenager. It has less of the 'fun stuff' and more about music and artists. The colours again are bright bold colours but used in a more sophisticated way.
The target audience for "Beatz magazine' is older teenagers. This magazine is an urban, Hip hop, Rap music, news, reviews and interviews. It has much more daring images in then the pop magazines. This is mainly because of the audience is older. The colours are contrasting, this works well because it makes it stand out.

Evaluation
In reflection on my project i feel that i have done very well. Seeing as i'm new to all the software and designing of magazines i have really enjoyed it. I feel my choice of fonts has worked well and i think that they would be that on a really magazine that was getting published. i think my colour scheme may be controversial as people may say that it looks boring and dull. But i feel that most people try and make it so bright and bold to grab the attention of the reader that they can get carried away and put so much colour on there that the actual content get lost. I think that the fact that i have got black and white and red, this will make my magazine stand out against the 'magazines of rainbows.'
I think that i would work better on my layout. For example, my front cover main headline isn't as bold as i would have liked it to be. It also covers the models head which makes the picture not as affective. The picture should be the bit that makes the reader want to read it, and see who that model is. I would change this by creating a box around the main headline.
Overall i feel that i have worked hard in creating what i have, and i feel i have done well as it is my first time. But, there is definitely a few things i would improve and change.

Proposal
I am aiming my magazine at all genders at college. This will be shown through an appropriate colour scheme (not all pink) so it will appeal to boys as well as girls. The typical content in my magazine will be about life at college, revision techniques and have a few freebe vouchers in. I feel that this is the right kind of things to put in a magazine for this age group. My cover lines could be about general life at college, for example, 'take a look into Laura's life at college.' There could be ones about student union. I decided on choosing the title 'Ultimate.' I thought that this would be a good title because it could be interpreted in a range of ways and mean something different to each individual student. I did think of "SDC' but i thought that this wasn't that original and inventive so i rejected this title. I want to use 'Chalkduster' as one of my main fonts because i feel it relates to the 'school/college' look. 'American typewriter' and 'Bank Gothic' appeal to me as they are clear and look good. I think a tag line would be good for example 'Ultimate is the guide to success at college.' My magazine would be released in october time as that is the time when it get cold and people start to think about halloween. So the black and white go with this. I think my front cover image will be a girl looking natural and pretty, books in hand. It will be the girl that has the main story in the magazine. The magazine will be an every month magazine with different themes to go with what is happening that month. My magazine will be an A4 size (normal magazine size) which is just the right size to carry around with you. on the contents page i will have a picture and maybe a few smaller pictures and boxes to go around the page numbers. The colours will be red, black and white, these are very bold colours which will also stand out. they will be the same as the front cover.
